Svadhishthana

Svadisthana: Second Chakra

The second chakra is located at the sacrum.  Associated with the element of water, the energy of this chakra is very fluid, very changeable.  This is the realm of our emotions, desires, passions, polarities,  our creativity and how we relate to others.

This chakra is all about relationships, our sexuality and self gratification.    When it is out of balance we suffer with poor boundaries with others as well as our own.

The Demon of this Chakra is Guilt

Guilt blocks the free flow of energy within the body and physical movement by taking the pleasure out of it.  When we feel guilty we do not fully enjoy what we are doing because a part of us has become frozen, restricting and trying to control what we are doing.   This lack of pleasure leaves us unsatisfied with the experience, and thus we want to repeat it.  Guilt is a predominant cause of compulsion, and addictive behaviour.

Think of your relationship with food for example.  What is your reaction when you are eating something you ‘shouldn’t’?  Or perhaps you have a potent charge with something else.

The second chakra the realm of duality, the light and shadow, the ‘good’ and ‘bad’ of our personality.  When we look closely at our shadow, we are able to comprehend fully who we are.  Guilt has its place, it is warning us we are out of integrity, and we need to realign ourselves.  It helps us set healthy boundaries.  With this understanding we are able to release ourselves from the freezing grasp of this shadow emotion.

The Unaligned Svadisthana

  • Emotional: Restless, anxious, lonely, shame, abandoned, needy, angry against the opposite sex, self-rejection, sadness, grief.
  • Mental: Duality, frustrated, confused, judgemental, unattainable desires, unable to make choices, jealous and revengeful, fantasies and grandiose illusions.
  • Physical: Rigid, controlled, limited.
  • Beliefs: I don’t have what it takes, something is the matter with me, I deserve to be rejected.
  • Behaviour: Craves, but avoids connection, blame, compulsive sexuality, impotence, indulgence in excesses, lack of satisfying creative expression.

The Balanced Svadisthana

  • Emotions: Feeling secure in self, joyful, happy, sincere purity, deep inner satisfaction.
  • Mental: Centred, enthusiastic about life, non-judgmental, able to make choices, free from obsessive attachments and beliefs.
  • Physical:  Relaxed, expansive.
  • Social: Charismatic, aware of limits and when to stop.
  • Beliefs: Belief in the self, feeling deserving of respect and love.
  • Behaviour: Spontaneous, social, unhesitant.

Money and the Second Chakra

We are constantly in relationship with money, many of us are not in a good relationship with it.  We misinterpret money to be a goal, when ultimately it is merely one of many tools to help us achieve goals we set.  Gurmukh reminds us that money is related to the idea of flow, that is why it is referred to as currency.  Notice how much water you drink; often when we are in a financial dry spell we are often dehydrated.

When we rebalance out second chakra, we reclaim our right to feel.  We reclaim passion, pleasure, vulnerability, and our sensate connection to both inner and outer reality.  We feel the flow of energy vital to transformation, change freeing us from the amour that separates us.  When we are able to get back in touch with our senses, our sensuality, we are no longer dulled, we become sensible instead of senseless.

Try this …

The second chakra is all about movement, if you are feeling stuck MOVE

Yoga of course is a great way to move, but so is going outside for a walk.  As you walk consciously breath.  As you inhale take the breath all the way down into your belly, allow it to fill and stick out a bit, let your rib cage expand.  As you exhale let your rib cage contract and draw your belly gently towards the spine.

Massage good, it helps the muscles relax and release blocked energy.  An alternative is to find a favourite piece of music and dance with wonderful abandonment, you will be amazed at how deeply relaxed you feel, and the great sense of pleasure you get… no one is watching…. go on have a go….
